Arthritis is
one of the most common diseases in the country. It
affects millions of adults and half of all people age 65
and older. There are more than 100 different kinds of
arthritis and many different symptoms and treatments.
Scientists do not know what causes most forms of
arthritis. They understand some better than others.
Despite the
financial and emotional challenges, most people with
arthritis can lead active and productive lives.
Treatment
strategies include: pain relief medications, rest and
exercise, patient education and support programs, and
learning self care and having a “good-health attitude”.

Along with taking
the right medicines, exercise is key to managing
arthritis symptoms. Daily exercise, such as walking or
swimming, helps keep joints moving, reduces pain and
strengthens muscles around the joints. Rest also is
important for joints affected by arthritis.
